This should be done in collaboration with your contract manufacturer (CM) and your electronic parts suppliers. This collaboration helps ensure that your design is well-suited for the fabrication process and can be fabricated in the timeframe you need.

Once the design is complete, the next step is to verify it in order to prepare for production. This involves using a PCB-specific software package, such as Gerber, to produce a blueprint that the CM can use for the actual board fabrication.

To create the etched, copper-based PCB, the blueprint is placed on top of a piece of laminate material that acts as the PCB’s “skeleton”. Surface finish options such as ENIG, immersion silver or tin, HASL, ENEPIG and more require extra steps and equipment that add to the overall lead time. Special characteristics such as impedance, dielectrics and blind/buried vias are other elements that can extend the lead times if not carefully considered at the design stage.
