I love a good sci-fi shooter, and Voidbreaker has just made its way straight onto my wishlist. Revealed during today’s Triple-i showcase, it’s got all the lasers, explosions, dystopian-future environments, and robotic enemies you could ever want from such a game. However, layer on top of that some environmental destruction that wouldn’t look out of place in Battlefield or The Finals, and a roguelike gameplay loop, and you’ve got yourself a tasty prospect. Oh, and despite it being freshly announced, you’ve got the chance to try it straight away.
Voidbreaker looks like a scintillating FPS game. You’re a prisoner, kept hostage by a hostile AI that sends you and other test subjects on daily death runs into an arena full of lethal robots. The end goal is a simple one – get the hell out of there. But that can only be achieved by nailing the perfect run and reaching the end of this deadly gauntlet. During each run, you’ll encounter forks in the road where you can choose to take on a more challenging path where better rewards and upgrades await, or a safer route where your odds of survival will be much higher.
The other component that can affect your run (aside from your aim, of course) is your loadout of weaponry. While the base guns themselves look fairly standard initially, Voidbreaker offers up a huge array of weapon mods that can create “limitless” loadout combinations. Mods can synergize with each other to create devastating abilities and high damage weapons, which you’ll need to take down the tougher, end-game foes.
You’ll have more than bullets at your disposal, though. Offering up some impressive environmental destruction, you can blast holes through walls to create new flanking routes or collapse ceilings and bridges onto enemies to wipe them out. It’s not just there to look flashy or satiate your power fantasy.
Overall, I think Voidbreaker looks terrific, and is all the more impressive when you realize it’s made by solo developer Daniel ‘Stubby Games’ Stubbington.
As mentioned, even though it’s just been revealed for the first time, you can actually start trying this new shooter out right away. A Voidbreaker open playtest is live now on Steam, and runs until Thursday, April 14.
