Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has celebrated a decade of its Accident Research team at the Mercedes-Benz SAFE ROADS India Summit 2024 in Bengaluru.

As the largest research hub for Mercedes-Benz Group AG outside Germany, MBRDI is committed to improving road safety, a growing concern in India, where over 4.8 lakh accidents occurred in 2023, claiming 1.72 lakh lives.

Studies show that 95 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers who used seat belts were uninjured, highlighting the importance of safety systems. The team, established in India to drive global accident research, investigates real-life accident cases, including seven involving electric vehicles, and gathers valuable data to improve vehicle safety.

One notable achievement is the team’s work on the first EQS accident investigation, showcasing its expertise with new technologies.

“MBRDI’s decade-long accident research provides crucial insights in fulfilling this purpose. With safety embedded in its core ethos, Mercedes-Benz uses data-driven innovation to address the unique challenges of diverse markets while advancing the collective vision of accident-free mobility by 2050,” said Prof. Dr. Paul Dick, Director of Vehicle Safety at Mercedes-Benz AG. The team’s efforts help shape safer Mercedes-Benz vehicles for the future.

The India-based team also pioneers innovative technologies like deep learning-based image anonymisation, with over 80 percent accuracy, and cutting-edge tools such as Xentry diagnostics, Python data analysis, and 3D scanning. These technologies are helping to improve vehicle safety while ensuring privacy through anonymisation techniques.

Manu Saale, Managing Director of MBRDI, shared, “SAFE ROADS is a testament to our commitment to raising awareness, increasing collaboration, and taking an insights-driven approach to address India’s unique road safety challenges.”

The SAFE ROADS India Summit, part of a nationwide initiative launched in 2015, gathers experts from various fields to share solutions for road safety. This year, a panel discussion with industry leaders explored the significance of data in improving safety.

A student ideathon also showcased innovative ideas, such as LiDAR-based terrain detection for ADAS and AI-driven driver feedback systems, illustrating the potential of technology to transform road safety.

Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing work in road safety research aims to reduce accidents and save lives, with the ultimate goal of accident-free mobility by 2050.
