How to Get an Indian Driving License

Before applying for a driving license in India, one must note the eligibility criteria. The applicant must be under the age of 18 years for geared two-wheelers and private cars. For a commercial vehicle license, the minimum age criteria is 20 years.

Steps to Apply

  • Visit at Parivahan.gov.in website
  • Appear for a basic test on traffic rules and signs
  • Valid for 6 months; eligible for permanent license after 30 days.

Step 2: Apply for a Permanent Driving License

  • Book a slot online through Parivahan or visit your local RTO.
  • Appear for a practical driving test.
  • If you pass, the license is sent to your registered address or can be downloaded digitally.

Cost of Indian Driving License (2025)

  • Learner’s License Fee: Rs 150
  • Driving Test Fee: Rs 300
  • Driving License Issuance Fee: Rs 200
  • Smart Card Fee (varies by state): Rs 200 Rs 500
  • Total Cost Estimate: Rs 500Rs 1,100 approx.

How to Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from India

The applicant must have a valid Indian driving license, and can apply within the validity period of their Indian license.

Application Process via RTO

  • Visit your local RTO with documents and fees
  • Submit Form 4A (IDP application form)
  • Provide a valid visa and travel tickets
  • No driving test required

Option 2: Apply via Parivahan

  • Visit Parivahan.gov.in Online Services Driving License Related Services
  • Select your state Apply for an International Driving Permit
  • Fill in details, upload documents, and pay fees
  • Visit the RTO for document verification

Cost of International Driving License (2025)

  • Government Fee: Rs 1,000
  • Medical Certificate & Photos: Rs 200Rs 500
  • Total Estimate: Rs 1,200Rs 1,500
  • Note: Processing time is usually 2–5 working days.
