Many people believe that all soldiers automatically avoid paying toll tax as a mark of respect.

The reality is different. Only soldiers on duty and travelling in government vehicles are eligible for exemptions. Those in personal vehicles, or travelling off duty, must pay toll like any ordinary citizen.

Who gets the toll exemption?

According to the Indian Tolls (Army and Air Force) Act, 1901, soldiers on official duty do not have to pay toll tax. But the exemption is not automatic. Toll plaza staff may ask soldiers to produce official documents proving that the journey is work-related.

What documents are required?

To claim a toll exemption, soldiers must carry:

  • Duty Order or Transit Pass
  • Unit Authorisation Letter
  • Valid Army ID

If these documents are in order and the trip is official, the toll tax is waived. Retired soldiers, however, do not receive any exemption, even if many people request it as a courtesy.

What about private vehicles?

Soldiers travelling in their personal cars, bikes, or other vehicles must pay tolls if they are not on official duty. Showing an army ID alone will not grant any exemption. This is clearly stated in the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.

What is toll tax and why is it charged?

Toll tax is a fee charged for using highways, bridges, tunnels, or expressways. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) oversees toll collection, sets rules, and manages exemptions. The system ensures roads are maintained and improved for safer travel.
