Dermatologist reveals how skincare routine can make difference for over 50s

With new anti-ageing serums hitting the shelves almost every month, the world of skincare can be difficult to navigate.

However, a dermatologist has shared that the small tubes of creams and serums are no miracle workers. But while the products won’t make you instantly younger, they still have some hidden benefits.

Dr Shereene Idriss, a board-certified dermatologist with a focus on cosmetics, took to her TikTok channel to issue skincare advice for over 50s.

She said: “People do not understand that skincare can only go so deep. It’s called skincare for a reason.

“Don’t get me wrong, skincare is a very powerful tool that can really change the quality of your skin for the better when done right. But is it going to affect the overall structure of your face? Absolutely not.

“And that’s why I always hate those claims of ‘volumising creams’ because nothing is going to restore volume.”

Dr Idriss explained you should think about your face as a couch. She said: “You have your structure which is the bony frame – that’s the wooden foundation of your couch.

“Then we have the feathers – this is what you would consider [to be] the volume in your face.

“And then you have the fabric of your couch which is your skin. The structure, the bony frame can never get fixed by skincare.

“As we get older, our orbital rim recedes, our jawline gets narrower and pushed back.

“The only thing that’s going to affect this is going to be surgery and implant, which I do not recommend, or just accepting how you’re going to age.”

When it comes to the feathers of your couch, or your volume, that’s where fillers, certain stimulants, and other cosmetic procedures can be helpful but not skincare.

While these two areas of your face can’t be altered by the creams and serums you apply before bed, the fabric of your couch, or your skin, can be.

The dermatologist said: “But when you are talking about the fabric of your couch, that’s where skincare can make all the difference.

“We are not going to get a skin transplant, but we can definitely work on the colour of your skin – the first thing that is going to give away as you get older.

“You’re going to end up with some discoloration, some sunspots and some unevenness in your skin tone, that’s going to make you look overall ruttier.”

This is where products like vitamin C can step in by helping even out the skin tone, fade sun spots and boost dull, tired-looking skin.
