Clean microwaves with just one item you already own

Cleaning your kitchen and all of its appliances doesn’t have to be a tough job.

While it’s tempting to use every cleaning product under the sun, there are a number of hacks which use minimal harsh chemicals.

Instead, experts have shared an even simpler way to get sparkling results, which require just one item to do the job.

Before arming yourself with any commercial or homemade cleaning products, head towards a sponge.

The humble sponge may be the answer to your microwave woes.

Jennifer Rodriguez, chief hygiene officer at Pro Housekeepers, told NBC News that to banish any grime in your microwave all you need is a clean sponge and “nuke” it.

Simply place a clean, damp sponge – or a cloth – on the microwave tray and switch the appliance on high for two minutes.

This can help soften bits of food and grime that’s stuck to the inside of your microwave.

Once the microwave has cooled down, you can wipe away any grime with the sponge from the microwave’s interior.

Jennifer said: “This will kill bacteria. Then use a sponge or cloth to wipe down the microwave.”

According to Whirlpool, regular microwaving helps kill bacteria and keep your sponge clean.

The hack helps kill bacteria by the heat generated in the microwave can reach high temperatures that are capable of deactivating a significant amount of bacteria.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), microwaving sponges kills 99.99999 per cent of bacteria present on them, while dishwashing kills 99.9998 per cent of bacteria.
