The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that construction of service roads at two busy points along the Bengaluru airport road (NH 44) will be completed by October.
A 1-km service road near Esteem Mall in Hebbal and a 1.1-km stretch at Jakkur are under construction. Each road will be about 10 metres wide, with two lanes, paved shoulders, a 2.5-metre utility duct, and a 1.5-km drain.
Once ready, these will ease congestion for airport-bound vehicles, especially during peak hours.
Why Was the Work Delayed?
The project faced an eight-year delay due to land acquisition issues. Only after the land was secured could NHAI begin the work.
As per Deccan Herald, Regional Officer Vilas P Brahmankar explained that the service roads were not part of the original plan since the required land was unavailable earlier.
What Are the Current Challenges?
At Hebbal, NHAI is also widening a small bridge to allow smooth water flow from Hebbal Lake. The bridge is almost ready but awaits curing and dry weather before the final road surface can be laid.
Meanwhile, at Jakkur, work has slowed down due to pending tree-cutting permissions. Though 500 metres have been completed, NHAI awaits approval to remove around 20 trees despite paying fees to the city’s forest cell.
How Will This Help Commuters?
Traffic police noted congestion near Hebbal due to the ongoing work. However, NHAI officials insist that no main carriageway space has been taken, meaning traffic flow remains unaffected.
Local residents welcome the move. Many buses halt at Hebbal, creating bottlenecks, especially during rain. Once complete, the service roads will free up the main road for airport travellers and reduce delays.
