Trains have always been a popular choice for travel, offering comfort, enjoyment, and panoramic views. Switzerland, in particular, is world-famous for its breathtaking train journeys through the Alps. This time, however, the country has gone a step further, making history by operating the world’s longest passenger train, securing a Guinness World Record, and reaffirming its reputation for engineering excellence.

This record-breaking feat is not only an engineering marvel but also a unique travel experience, allowing passengers to soak in scenic vistas while sharing the joy of the ride with family and friends. The 1.91 km-long marvel, run by the Rhaetian Railway, has captured global attention and offered passengers an unforgettable journey through the Alps.

The marvellous train stretched 1,910 metres (6,266ft/1.91km) and consisted of 100 coaches. It was powered by 25 modern Capricorn engines, showcasing a remarkable feat of coordination and technology.

The special service ran along the Albula-Bernina route between Preda and Alvaneu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking views. This made the journey not just historic but also visually spectacular for those on board.

The train was operated to mark the 175th anniversary of Swiss Railways. On its celebratory run, it carried 150 passengers, moving steadily at a speed of 30-35 km/h.

This successful train run earned Switzerland the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest passenger train, a milestone in global railway history.

India also holds its place in the world of record-breaking trains. Indian Railways operates Super Vasuki, the country’s longest and heaviest freight train. This 3.5 km-long giant, launched in 2022, carried 27,000 tonnes of coal in one journey.

Meanwhile, Vivek Express, with 22 coaches, holds the record as India’s longest passenger train by distance covered. The Swiss achievement has once again highlighted the global fascination with railway engineering and the pride that nations take in pushing the limits of rail travel.
