What makes an FPS game feel original? In the original Half-Life, it’s the combination of combat and puzzles and the subtle attention paid to story, both newisms in 1998. Doom Eternal’s lightning pace and myriad weapons make it feel like a brutal ballet, while Far Cry 2 stands out for its sheer nastiness. Atomic Heart is uniquely weird. An unprecedented mix of sci-fi and surrealism, with Atomic Heart 2 on the way, the original game has just dropped to its lowest price ever.
Atomic Heart was easily one of the weirdest FPS games to be released in 2023. Set in a retrofuturistic, alternate timeline where the Soviets became a global superpower after WW2, and where human-like automatons serve the whims of people, things take a violent turn when the robots malfunction and decide they’d rather paint the streets with their owners’ blood than serve another cup of coffee.
As special agent P-3 – accompanied by your AI partner CHAR-les – you must make your way through the Soviet Union’s main scientific research hub, Facility 3826, shutting down the rogue automatons and failed experiments (including a very randy vending machine) that have overrun the facility, utilizing your power glove and eclectic arsenal of blades and futuristic weapons.
Atomic Heart is an incredibly dynamic, downright absurd, and immensely enjoyable shooter. With the Atomic Heart 2 release date on the way, its current price drop couldn’t have come at a better time.
