Nagpur is racing ahead with vehicle registrations, recording an all-time high of 73,926 new vehicles between January 1 and June 21, 2025.

That’s an average of 432 vehicles registered daily — the fastest growth the city has witnessed in the past five years. At this pace, Nagpur will easily surpass the 2024 total of 1.52 lakh vehicles by October, as per TOI.

Nagpur East Leads the Race

The Nagpur East RTO is leading the charge with 32,361 registrations this year. Nagpur Rural follows with 28,097, while the city RTO recorded 13,468 new vehicles — a lower figure likely due to saturated roads and space constraints in the urban core. The rise is strongest in the eastern and outer areas, driven by growing residential and commercial development.

Electric Vehicles See a Sharp Rise

Electric mobility is also gaining serious traction. Over 10,000 EVs — including battery-operated vehicles, pure electric models, and strong hybrids — have been registered in 2025 alone. Nagpur East has again topped the charts with more than 6,100 EVs, followed by combined totals of over 6,000 from Nagpur City and Rural.

The EV trend marks a major jump from 2021 when Nagpur City had only 473 EVs. East Nagpur went from 1,409 EVs in 2021 to over 6,000 in 2025, while Rural rose from just 309 to more than 2,700.

EVs Now 13 Percent of Total New Vehicles

EVs now account for more than 13 percent of total registrations in 2025, driven by:

  • Better affordability
  • Government incentives
  • Rising environmental awareness

Hybrid and ethanol-based vehicles are also on the rise, showing a clear shift towards sustainable transport.

Can Infrastructure Keep Up?

While the rising vehicle count reflects economic growth and aspirations, it’s also raising concerns. Traffic congestion, insufficient parking, and slow infrastructure upgrades are posing serious challenges. Civic planners are urging urgent steps like:

  • Expanding EV charging networks
  • Decongesting major roads
  • Investing in public transport.
