Perhaps the most important aspect in creating a truly memorable first-person shooter is good sound design. It’s something Doom gets extremely right, but the vicious intensity of Trepang2 matches it beat for beat. Drawing inspiration from classic PC shooters like FEAR, but with the potential for more high-octane glory that embraces true combat flow, Trepang2 has earned itself a mighty 93% Steam rating. If you’ve overlooked one of the most explosive, essential FPS games in years, you can get it at a whopping discount for a short time.
Trepang2 doesn’t get too bogged down in convoluted narrative design. You are a supersoldier who has been broken out from a military blacksite, and you’re going to need to rack up quite the bodycount to find the truth of what’s going on. Infused with superhuman strength and speed, this is an FPS game that gives you true freedom of expression.
Sneak through the shadows and unleash rapid retribution on foes before they know what hit them, and you’ll feel like a turbocharged counterpart to Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher. Or go loud and make use of slow-motion combat slides and mid-air stomps in a fashion that feels almost akin to the bombastic brutality of Bulletstorm. The choice is yours.
Sometimes, the action feels like a ridiculous fusion of FEAR and Crysis, with you hurling ragdolling enemies across military complexes as explosions ring out. In other cases, however, Trepang can feel deeply intense, even scary, with the stomping of boots on floorboards around you punctuated by the occasional blast of a SPAS-12, or the disconcerting screams of a writhing enemy as they fall to the ground ablaze.
Don’t just take my word for it, or rely on the game’s hugely positive Steam rating – read our own Ed’s delightful words on exactly why Trepang2 deserves far more attention than it’s had to date. Then make that change and experience it for yourself thanks to today’s Fanatical star deal, which drops its price lower than it’s ever been on Steam.
Trepang 2 is 63% off on Steam via Fanatical, meaning you’ll pay just $11.09 / £9.24 for your copy. The deal ends on Monday March 24 at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 4pm GMT / 5pm CET. Just click the box above or go directly to Fanatical to buy it while you can.
